PSE’s Energy Supply Merchant team is looking for qualified candidates to fill an open Senior Quantitative Risk Analyst position!

Job Description

This position will work cross-functionally to represent PSE in various market and policy forums. Analyze the impact of proposed market design initiatives, regulatory rule making, and market alternatives on PSE’s organized market position. Draft policy and contract language that effectively communicates PSE’s position for vendors, stakeholders, and management. Responsible for the development, maintenance, and operation of Market design elements for organized markets. Understands, communicates, and defends analytical results. Provides data driven insights to support asset optimization, risk management strategies, and energy procurement decisions. Analyzes PSE’s resource portfolio, commodity transactions, and market and financial data to provide input to the energy procurement and hedging strategy. Performs market risk analytics and exposure measurement and develops and communicates risk reports to Management. 

 

Upholds the safety compliance standards inherent in PSE’s operating and/or field procedures related to work responsibilities. Promotes and supports a culture of total safety.

Job Responsibilities

  • Work cross-functionally to represent PSE in various market and policy forums. Analyze the impact of proposed market design initiatives, regulatory rule making, and market alternatives on PSE’s organized market position. Draft policy and contract language that effectively communicates PSE’s position for vendors, stakeholders, and management. 
  • Partner with trading, operations, and policy staff to utilize business intelligence and analysis to inform market strategy and management decision-making.
  • Maintain knowledge of energy market dynamics, including renewable resource and energy usage trends, and perform fundamental market analysis.
  • Support WUTC rate case filings by preparing testimony and responding to (and initiating) data requests from external stakeholders. 
  • Perform ad hoc analysis and other duties as assigned.
  • Partner with trading, operations, and policy staff to utilize business intelligence and analysis to inform market strategy and management decision-making.
  • Lead intermittent high-impact, high-dollar projects and efforts related to organized wholesale electric power market participation.
  • Inform the refinement of third-party and in-house software configuration to reflect changes as needed.
  • Duties will include researching and summarizing various stakeholder processes and regulatory proceedings, attending and leading meetings, drafting and distributing meeting summaries and presentations, reviewing and summarizing parties’ comments, and working with PSE staff to draft and submit PSE comments where appropriate.
  • Track and support PSE efforts to engage in clean energy policies, resource adequacy, transmission, and market development in the Western Interconnection.
  • Self-starter and thrives in ambiguity.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field. (Finance, Economics, Statistics, Engineering, or similar)
  • Minimum 4 years work experience, preferably as a quantitative analyst in the energy industry
  • Proficiency with quantitative methods and concepts including regression analysis, Monte Carlo simulations, scenario analysis,  and stress testing
  • Experience with financial analysis and familiarity with accounting principles
  • Advanced skills in MS Office, especially Excel, including proficiency in writing macros and queries
  • Excellent communication, writing, and presentation skills
  • Self-starter with the ability to work effectively without direct supervision in a fast paced, stressful, and multitasking environment

Desired Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in a quantitative field
  • 8+ years of energy industry experience, preferably in an analyst role
  • Hands on experience building and operating quantitative models
  • Programming experience in Python, R, SQL, MATLAB, or similar
  • Experience with production cost modeling software such as Plexos, Aurora, GenTrader, PROMOD
  • Knowledge of portfolio risk management principles
  • Experience in western gas and power markets
  • Familiarity with regulated utility rate cases and state regulatory agencies/public utility commissions

The pay range for this position is $101,000.00 – $168,200.00, and this position is eligible for annual goals based incentive bonuses.
