Satellite Communication Systems Research Engineer – Technical Staff at MIT Lincoln Laboratory – Lexington, MA, US
The Advanced SATCOM Systems and Operations Group is developing technologies for the most advanced communication satellites, and SATCOM systems in the world. The Group is involved in a synergistic combination of research, prototyping, and experimentation efforts focused on the goals of enhancing the capacity, robustness to interference, and the flexibility of future generations of communications satellites and systems.
Current research areas draw from advanced concepts in Information Theory, Communication Theory, Network Theory, Array Processing, Estimation and Detection, Machine Learning, Antennas and Arrays, Dynammic Resource Allocation, and Optimization. Selected candidates will actively participate in the design, analysis, implementation, and demonstration of novel communications waveforms, signal processing algorithms, resource allocation schemes, SATCOM system architectures, antennas and arrays, media access protocols, and networking protocols. The individual will typically work in multi-disciplinary teams in which team members possess expertise in communications theory, networking, information assurance, systems engineering, antennas and arrays, digital hardware, and software defined radio. The individual will have opportunities to work with the government, academia, and industry as well as make contributions towards DoD policy, requirements, acquisition, systems engineering, and operations.
Required Experience:
- Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering (or related field) with a strong background in wireless communications and signal processing. In lieu of a Ph.D., an M.S. with 3+ years of directly relevant experience is acceptable.
- Experience and/or coursework in wireless communications theory, information theory, digital signal processing, estimation and detection, optimization, radio frequency propagation modeling, linear algebra.
- Proficiency with MATLAB, Python, C/C++ or other equivalent modeling and simulation tools.
- Highly effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively in multi-disciplinary teams.

- Machine learning, adaptive filtering, array processing, media access control protocols, networking
- Fixed point algorithm design and implementation targeting embedded processors such as FPGA, GPU, DSP

Responsibilities
- Work with a team of dedicated Software Engineers, Product Engineers, and Site Reliability Engineers to design, build, and maintain the most desired capabilities and enhancements
- Build Java and Scala components and web services to power user experience and geospatial workflows
- Use Java, Scala, JavaScript, Typescript, React and Dojo to develop applications that follow industry-standard design patterns, development methodologies, and deployment models
- Develop software used by people who are not software developers. Ensure the exceptional software you create influences them to be exceptional professionals in their respective fields
- Prototype, design, develop, and deliver complete software features and products that can scale, are fault tolerant, and handle concurrent workloads
- Evolve your language skills by staying current with complementary programming languages, development methodologies, user interface design techniques, and database tools
Requirements
- 5+ years of professional experience in a similar position supporting similar responsibilities
- Professional experience developing software components using Java or Scala as well as JavaScript, Typescript, React, and HTML
- Working knowledge of databases such as MongoDB, Oracle, SQL Server, PostgreSQL
- Object oriented design skills
- Strong understanding of Java and JavaScript design patterns
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including presentation skills
- Effective time management and organizational skills
- Knowledge of data formats including JSON, XML, and delimited text
- Fundamental understanding of web services including REST
- Experience working with large codebases
- Strong critical thinking, problem-solving, and analytical skills
- Have a passion for quality, are detail oriented, and have a desire to improve products
- Proven ability to work in a self-led or team environment
- Bachelor’s in computer science or STEM related field
Recommended Qualifications
- Experience with technologies such as Apache Spark, Kafka, OpenSearch, or distributed big databases.
