Perform complex analytical and statistical modeling on large data sets to support various business operations and organizational objectives. Define data requirements, perform data collection, processing, cleaning, analysis, modeling and visualization.   • Develop, maintain, and manage advanced reporting, dashboards, data models and analytical results
  • Evaluate and define functional requirements for analytics and business intelligence (BI) solutions
  • Retrieve, analyze and validate data and test accuracy of reported results
  • Work directly with project leads to understand requirements and propose key analytics solutions to drive effective decision-making and influence business objectives
  • Produce actionable reports that demonstrate key performance indicators, identify areas of improvement for current operations, and show root cause analysis of problems.
  • Analyze and summarize business operations, customer and/or economic data in order to improve business intelligence, optimize operating effectiveness and predict business outcomes.
  • Identify trends and patterns in business data; create data visualizations to support business decision making
  • Build new and/or modify existing database/data warehouse/data mart and business intelligence solutions to meet business and system requirements

  • Must have previous experience with financial lending products and financial services (credit cards, auto / home loans) 
  • Expert skill identifying and analyzing business requirements and recommending solutions
  • Advanced knowledge of various data structures and ability to extract data sources (e.g., PySpark, PowerBI)
  • Extensive experience in problem resolution including determining root cause, scope and scale of issues
  • Advanced knowledge of standard ETL tools and techniques
  • Advanced knowledge of the process in sourcing raw data and cleansing techniques
  • Advanced knowledge of data warehousing, data cleaning, and other analytical techniques required for data usage
  • Expert in understanding and communicating data presented in models, charts, and tables and transforming it into a format that is useful to the business and aids effective decision making
  • Expert in understanding and analyzing models that predict the probability of an outcome
  • Advanced knowledge of and the ability to perform basic statistical analysis such as measures of central tendency, normal distribution, variance, standard deviation, basic tests, correlation, and regression techniques

GovAI Annual Report 2021 | GovAI Blog


A Note from Ben Garfinkel, Acting Director

2021 was a year of big changes for GovAI.

Most significantly, we spun out from the University of Oxford and adopted a new non-profit structure. At the same time, after five years within the organisation, I stepped into the role of Acting Director. Our founder, Allan Dafoe, shifted into the role of President. We also created a new advisory board consisting of several leaders in AI governance: Allan, Ajeya Cotra, Tasha McCauley, Toby Ord, and Helen Toner.

Successfully managing these transitions was our key priority for the past year. Over a period of several months — through the hard work, particularly, of Markus Anderljung (Head of Policy), Alexis Carlier (Head of Strategy), and Anne le Roux (Head of Operations) — we completed our departure from Oxford, arranged a new fiscal sponsorship relationship with the Centre for Effective Altruism, revised our organisation chart and management structures, developed a new website and new branding, and fundraised $3.8 million to support our activities in the coming years.

Our fundamental mission has not changed: we are still building a global research community, dedicated to helping humanity navigate the transition to a world with advanced AI. However, these transitions have served as a prompt to reflect on our activities, ambitions, and internal structure. One particularly significant implication of our exit from Oxford has been an increase in the level of flexibility we have in hiring, fundraising, operations management, and program development. In the coming year, as a result, we plan to explore expansions in our field-building and policy development work. We believe we may be well-placed to organise an annual conference for the field, to offer research prizes, and to help bridge the gap between AI governance research and policy.

Although 2021 was a transitional year, this did not prevent members of the GovAI team from producing a stream of new research. The complete list of our research output – given below – contains a large volume of research targeting different aspects of AI governance. One piece that I would like to draw particular attention to is Dafoe et al.’s paper Open Problems in Cooperative AI, which resulted in the creation of a $15 million foundation for the study of cooperative intelligence.

Our key priority for the coming year will be to grow our team and refine our management structures, so that we can comfortably sustain a high volume of high-quality research while also exploring new ways to support the field. Hiring a Chief of Staff will be a central part of this project. We are also currently hiring for Research Fellows and are likely to open a research management role in the future. Please reach out to

I’m proud to be part of this community, and I hope that GovAI will find ways to support it for many years to come.

Data Analyst II at Navy Federal Credit Union – Pensacola, FL, United States


Perform complex analytical and statistical modeling on large data sets to support various business operations and organizational objectives. Define data requirements, perform data collection, processing, cleaning, analysis, modeling and visualization. Identify data patterns and trends to answer business questions and improve decision making. Identify opportunities to increase efficiency and automation of data analysis processes and procedures. Participate on complex, essential projects working under minimal supervision and with latitude for independent judgment. Accountable for completion of assigned projects and deliverables. Highly skilled and proficient in discipline with demonstrated achievement of results.

  • Develop, maintain, and manage advanced reporting, dashboards, data models and analytical results
  • Evaluate and define functional requirements for analytics and business intelligence (BI) solutions
  • Retrieve, analyze and validate data and test accuracy of reported results
  • Work directly with project leads to understand requirements and propose key analytics solutions to drive effective decision-making and influence business objectives
  • Produce actionable reports that demonstrate key performance indicators, identify areas of improvement for current operations, and show root cause analysis of problems
  • Analyze and summarize business operations, customer and/or economic data in order to improve business intelligence, optimize operating effectiveness and predict business outcomes
  • Identify trends and patterns in business data; create data visualizations to support business decision making
  • Build new and/or modify existing database/data warehouse/data mart and business intelligence solutions to meet business and system requirements
  • Collaborate with business units and senior management to conduct needs assessment to support business unit objectives
  • Support complex Data Science and Big Data projects
  • Effectively communicate data outcomes to business stakeholders and leadership
  • Mentor and guide less experienced staff Metadata Analyst Specific Responsibilities
  • Work with business units to collect, review, and publish Metadata
  • Maintain and enhance Data Catalog (e.g., Purview) and PowerBI Reports
  • Evaluate and enhance the Data Governance & Metadata Collection Framework
  • Perform other duties as assigned
  • Significant experience in the application of statistical methods, mathematical techniques, forecasting, cost-benefit analysis, related analytical tools and programming languages
  • Significant experience in problem resolution including determining root cause, scope and scale of issues
  • Significant experience that demonstrates the ability to research, compile, and document data, business processes, and workflow
  • Working knowledge of standard ETL tools and techniques
  • Working knowledge of the process in sourcing raw data and cleansing techniques
  • Working knowledge of data warehousing, data cleaning, and other analytical techniques required for data usage
  • Advanced knowledge of and the ability to perform basic statistical analysis such as measures of central tendency, normal distribution, variance, standard deviation, basic tests, correlation, and regression techniques
  • Working knowledge of data models, design tools, business/technical requirements, statistical programming languages, data queries
  • Demonstrates a key understanding of multiple database concepts and data flows
  • Working knowledge of various data structures and ability to extract data sources (e.g., PySpark, PowerBI)
  • Working knowledge of mapping techniques and data pipelines
  • Advanced skill interpreting, extrapolating and interpolating data for statistical research and modeling
  • Advanced skill analyzing statistics and reports to determine business performance and trends
  • Advanced skill identifying and analyzing business requirements and recommending solutions
  • Effective skill presenting findings, conclusions, alternatives and information clearly and concisely
  • Advanced skill in understanding and communicating data presented in models, charts, and tables and transforming it into a format that is useful to the business and aids effective decision making
  • Advanced skill in the use of measurement and statistical practices to analyze current and historical data to make predictions, identify risks, and opportunities enabling better decisions on planned/future events
  • Advanced skill in understanding and analyzing models that predict the probability of an outcome
  • Advanced skill in collecting and manipulating data used in effective decision making
  • Advanced SQL skills
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills
  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or the equivalent combination of training, education and experience

Desired Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of Navy Federal Human Resources policies, procedures, and programs
  • Working knowledge of Operational Transaction Processing (OLAP/OLTP) applications and systems
  • PMP Certification (or commensurate experience managing corporate-wide projects)
  • Advanced degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, Engineering, or related field
