Device Economics is looking for a senior economist experienced in causal inference, machine learning, empirical industrial organization, and scaled systems to work on business problems to advance critical resource allocation and pricing decisions in the Amazon Devices org. Senior roles lead vision setting, methods innovation, and act as thought leaders to Devices finance and business executives. Output will be included in scaled systems to automate existing processes and to maximize business and customer objectives.

Amazon Devices designs and builds Amazon first-party consumer electronics products to delight and engage customers. Amazon Devices represents a highly complex space with 100+ products across several product categories (e-readers [Kindle], tablets [Fire Tablets], smart speakers and audio assistants [Echo], wifi routers [eero], and video doorbells and cameras [Ring and Blink]), for sale both online and in offline retailers in several regions. The space becomes more complex with dynamic product offering with new product launches and new marketplace launches. The Device Economics team leads in analyzing these complex marketplace dynamics to enable science-driven decision making in the Devices org. Device Economics achieves this through scientific applications that provide deep understanding of customer preferences. Our team’s outputs inform product development decisions, investments in future product categories, and product pricing and promotion. We have achieved substantial impact on the Devices business, and will achieve more.

Device Economics seeks an experienced economist adept in measuring customer preferences and behaviors with proven capacity to innovate, scale measurement, drive rigor, and mentor talent.

The candidate will work with Amazon Devices science leadership to refine science roadmaps, models, and priorities for innovation and simplification, and advance adoption of insights to influence important resource allocation and prioritization decisions. Effective communication skills (verbal and written) are required to ensure success of this collaboration. The candidate must be passionate about advancing science for business and customer impact.

Basic Qualifications

– PhD in economics or equivalent
– Experience in industry, consulting, government or academic research

What You’ll Do

  • Responsible for setting up the policy, procedures and standards for all aspect of managing model risk including ML, AI, GenAI risk. Partners closely with model validation team leaders as well as leaders of various model development and model usage teams to manage the enterprise model governance framework, policies and procedures.   • Actively manages and escalates risk and customer-impacting issues within the day-to-day role to management.

How You’ll Do It

  • Maintains model risk management infrastructure including model inventory, model performance KRIs, model risk events, model risk findings and actions etc. Leads the efforts in standardization, automation, workflow management. Contribute in enhancing current process for model validation.

  • Maintains status updates, and facilitate resolution/escalations of issues in a timely fashion. Creates periodic analytical and updates presentations and reports for senior management, executive management, risk committees and for regulatory exams. Supports management in developing, maintaining and monitoring model Key Risk Indicators, assesses aggregate model risk and periodically reports risk to Model Risk Committee and ensures emerging risk are addressed.

  • Creates and executes project work plans and collaborate with various teams in Finance (Strategy Planning & Treasury), Credit Risk, Marketing, IT etc. for Credit Card, Consumer Lending, Network and Banking Businesses to execute the objectives of the model governance program.

  • Analyzes complex quantitative models and the risks and controls around their usage. Establishes model performance thresholds and monitor model performance within acceptable thresholds.

  • Interacts with the external regulators and internal auditors to demonstrate the operational soundness and effectiveness of the model governance policy.

  • Interfaces with business partners in Finance, Treasury, IT, Credit Risk, Marketing for Card, Consumer Lending, Network and Banking Businesses.

Department Overview

Enterprise Risk Analytics (ERA) is a part of Citi’s Risk Management organization that is responsible for Enterprise-level risk metrics including stress testing. Enterprise-wide stress testing program is sponsored by the Citigroup CRO, who reviews the stress testing results with the rest of the executive management team. Enterprise Risk Analytics & Stress Testing is responsible for Enterprise Stress Testing with Legal Entity Oversight (LEO), Material Legal Entity (MLE) Stress Testing and Internal Capital Adequacy Assessment Plan (ICAAP) execution and oversight, Firmwide Scenario Design and Expansion which cover Enterprise programs and all Legal Entities.

The Enterprise Scenario Design (ESD) team within ERA is responsible for designing macro-economic and market shock scenarios for all enterprise level stress testing, capital planning, and reserve adequacy usages.

Role Overview

The ICAAP Economic Forecasting Lead reports to the Head of ICAAP Scenario Design. S/He will be responsible for the complete suite of process that is required to generate the ICAAP stress scenarios for different legal Citi entities. S/he will be responsible for providing both a subject matter expertise and hands on experience in econometric model development, execution, and assessment.

You will manage model development, model documentation and ongoing model maintenance, data quality controls, production oversight, reporting and reviews. This role also collaborates with the Economics and Strategy Research teams, other Risk functions, several line of businesses and Finance.

What you’ll do

  • Oversee the end-to-end process of ICAAP macroeconomic scenario design, including conducting research to come up with a range of possible scenario concepts, preparing the scenario narrative and forecasting macroeconomic series under the scenarios
  • Represent ESD team at the ICAAP macro scenario design related meetings
  • Develop models to expand enterprise scenario designs to all variables required by downstream models in EMEA, APAC, LATAM regions
  • Document models and perform ongoing model maintenance to comply with the firm’s model risk management policy
  • Work with model implementation team to facilitate production run
  • Monitor model output and perform ad hoc analysis as needed
  • Communicate results to diverse audiences
  • Provide guidance to junior modelers as and when necessary
  • Represent the bank in interactions with regulatory agencies, as required
  • The role requires the candidate to employ leadership and communication skills to signal to key stakeholders the results of their forecast and its implication to the broader regulatory initiative

What we’ll need from you

  • Experience in delivering macroeconomic scenario narratives and expansion for stress tests
  • Extensive experience with economic research and model development experience in forecasting economic and financial variables
  • Expertise in macro-economic analysis, forecasting
  • Familiar with ICAAP stress testing scenarios
  • Proven track record in macro-economic scenario review and narratives and determine optimal set of macro/finance risk drivers, the respective forecast
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills 
  • Candidates must have experiences in Python or R programming environment
  • Previous experience in a role requiring managing/analyzing large data sets and presenting the data visually to senior management is highly desired
  • Experience in project management, including planning, resourcing, status reporting, and issues management
  • Background from graduate level time series econometrics, macro-econometrics, business forecasting is essential to be successful in this role   
  • Experience in development and management of teams
  • Masters’ degree or equivalent experience in Economics, Econometrics, mathematics, statistics equivalent. PhD degree is preferred
