  • Réaliser un état de l’art de la planification basée modèle et de l’apprentissage par renforcement profond pour des problèmes à la fois continus et discrets, et de l’hybridation des approches basées modèle et données ;

  • Concevoir un algorithme de contrôle de systèmes à dynamique, états et actions continus/discrets, basé à la fois sur des modèles physiques et sur l’exploitation des données ;

  • Modéliser et simuler un contrôleur de systèmes propulsifs et de distribution de l’énergie basés sur des sources d’énergie hybrides ;

Are you up to discovering the forthcoming generation of aircrafts, with lower environmental footprint and more embedded electric systems?

Then apply now!

We look forward to you joining us as a PhD student “Optimization of energy management in a hybrid aircraft (m/f)” within Airbus SAS France, in the Central Research and Technologies division.

The department works in collaboration with INRIA in Nancy, France, in which you will be integrated as an external thesis student.
The thesis will be carried out both 60% in the INRIA premises in Nancy and 40% in those of Airbus in Toulouse Saint-Martin. The precise alternation period between the two sites will be defined later in agreement with the various stakeholders.

PhD thesis scope:

With a view to decarbonizing air transport, Airbus is engaged in research into new, more environmentally friendly means of propulsion. One of the avenues envisaged would be based on a hybrid concept combining both conventional propulsion by combustion of kerosene, or even SAF (Sustainable Aviation Fuel), and electric propulsion using hydrogen fuel cells. Reversible electromagnets placed in the reactors will make it possible to both convert the electricity from the batteries into propulsive work, and to convert the loss of energy during the descent or deceleration phases into electrical energy stored in the batteries. The use of two energy sources simultaneously (fuel combustion and hydrogen-based fuel cells) as well as the possibility of charging or discharging the batteries will require real-time monitoring of the level of use of each type. energy as well as the mode of use of the batteries (charging or discharging).

On-board energy management is generally separated into long-term and short-term management. Long-term optimization consists of dividing the flight into distinct phases (among others: takeoff, climb, cruise, descent, landing) on which the use profiles of the different energy sources are optimized. For each phase, short-term optimization aims to define the power controls for each energy source as well as the actions on the switches of the power circuits in order to route the electricity between the different batteries and the electrical and propulsion systems. . Long-term energy and short-term power management must make it possible to minimize carbon emissions by maximizing the use of batteries, while limiting battery degradation, and guaranteeing flight safety at all times. moment (minimum propulsive power, permanent power supply to electrical systems).

Long-term optimization of energy and short-term optimization of power relate to different mathematical characteristics which call for specific optimization methods: the first is a process with discrete time, states and actions (selection of energy sources per phase with their corresponding level of use), while the second requires continuous time control with states and actions that are both continuous (electrical quantities) and discrete (switch statuses). The thesis aims to generate short-term and long-term control policies, with dynamics, states and actions that are both continuous and discrete. These policies will be generated by innovative hybrid automated decision-making techniques in artificial intelligence, based both on knowledge of the logic of systems (model-based planning) and on the exploitation of massive simulations of the physics of underlying systems. (deep reinforcement learning). The hybridization of these techniques is considered one of the effective ways to handle both continuous and discrete aspects of such systems in a faithful manner, while reducing the amount of data and simulations required for data-only approaches. The results of the thesis will be demonstrated with realistic simulations of the systems of a prototype aircraft of the future on different types of mission.

The thesis work will therefore consist of:

  • Carry out a state of the art of model-based planning and deep reinforcement learning for both continuous and discrete problems, and the hybridization of model and data-based approaches;
  • Design a control algorithm for systems with dynamics, continuous/discrete states and actions, based both on physical models and on the exploitation of data;
  • Model and simulate a controller for propulsion and energy distribution systems based on hybrid energy sources;

The profile we are looking for:

  • Master of Research in Artificial Intelligence, Applied Mathematics, or Combinatorial Optimization
  • Knowledge of both deep learning and discrete/continuous optimization techniques
  • Comfortable with Python programming, possibly C++
  • Interest in scientific research and industrial applications

This job requires an awareness of any potential compliance risks and a commitment to act with integrity, as the foundation for the Company’s success, reputation and sustainable growth.
